This is the fourth part of my story, "The Wish Boat."
"What do you mean they just don't happen?" I asked Kayla as we walked back to my room to dry off once again.
"I just mean... hey, I just realized something!" Kayla exclaimed. "Almost all little kids wish on a star before they go to bed at night. I did, too. But it always seemed that my wishes didn't work. They only brought me bad luck. Like, for example, I was about to play piano in a talent show in front of all the ship's guests, and I wished that it would go well. But as I was playing my hands shook so hard I could barely play one note right!"
"Wait a minute," I said, listening. I'd heard something that sounded like a scream. "Did you hear that noise?"
"Yeah... I think it was coming from the hull of the ship."
"How do we get there? It sounds like someone's in trouble!"
"Follow me," Kayla led me down a different hallway, then opened one of the many doors and we went down some steps. Now we were in a big room filled with wooden boxes piled on more boxes piled on more boxes.
"This is the storage room, where we keep our food supply and things like that." Kayla explained.
"Are there any other rooms down here?" I asked her, searching the boxes for the source of the strange sound.
"Only one..." Kayla replied uncertainly.
"Which one?"
"The furnace room. It's really dangerous, and no one's allowed inside."
"But I bet someone's in there! I bet someone's hurt!" I exclaimed, running to the door to the furnace room. Suddenly, we both jumped, hearing the scream again coming from just beyond the door.
"That's it," I said decidedly, "I'm going in there, dangerous or not." Ignoring Kayla's protest, I turned the knob and pushed the door open. I would never forget what I saw in that furnace room.
